Beavers are "ecosystem engineers." They create habitat, such as wetlands and ponds, for wildlife by building dams. They are river caretakers in a sense, which help to increase biodiversity, impact ecosystem resources, transform landscapes, improve water quality and protect aquifer stores.

As unique water and land stewards, other wildlife depend on beavers, which makes them keystone species. If beavers vanished, it would result in ecosystem collapse.

Keystone species, like beavers, are critical for mitigating climate change. They help to create healthy ecosystems that store more carbon and can better withstand climate impacts.

On March 2, 2022, almost 200 nations agreed to formally develop a global treaty designed to reduce plastic pollution. This agreement is an important step in the right direction for preserving marine ecosystems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving overall planet health.

According to the IUCN, approximately 14 million tons of plastic makes its way into the ocean a year, making up 80% of all marine debris, which is harmful for wildlife and ecosystems. Too, many plastics that are "recycled" end up in landfills. In California, CalMatters sites that at least 85% of single use plastics are not recycled.

The treaty is also an important strategy for reaching global goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The plastics industry is responsible for at least 232 million tons of CO2e gas emissions per year, according to Beyond Plastics.
