Did you know that there are individual actions that you can take to protect coral reefs?

✔️ Vote for leaders who are working to improve climate policy and transition to clean, renewable energy.
✔️ Use reef friendly sunscreen and seek shade so you don’t have to use as much sunscreen.
✔️ Practice safe boating. (Don’t anchor in reefs or sea grasses. Anchor in sand instead.)
✔️ Reduce individual carbon footprint to help limit global temperature rise.
✔️ Donate to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to support research on marine environments.
✔️ Volunteer for ocean cleanups at your local beach/watershed and in your community. The Surfrider Foundation is one group who organizes local cleanups!
✔️ Reduce your plastic use and cut down on your waste. Plastic Free Mermaid has practical tips for reducing your plastic waste.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait people to protect the reef for future generations. They developed a partnership to govern the reef that includes the Marine Park Authority Board and an Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee.

As of 2022, more than half of the Great Barrier Reef’s catchment and approximately 15% of the World Heritage Area is under the authority of Indigenous people, interests or co-management arrangements.

We urgently need greater efforts on the local, state, national and international level to establish a framework for Indigenous led governance and partnership in the management of marine resources. Doing so will help preserve the cultural, economic and environmental benefits of coral reef ecosystems now and well into the future.

A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. (IUCN)

✔️ MPAs protect coral reef biodiversity and ecosystem health from overfishing, which affects 55% of the world’s reefs. (Coral Reef Alliance)

✔️ MPAs manage sedimentation and pollution, which smothers coral reefs, reduces their growth and reproduction, causes changes to food structures and makes them more susceptible to disease. (Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary)

✔️ MPAs protect coral reefs that support blue carbon sinks, like seagrass meadows, mangroves and tidal marshes.

👉To support the ocean, you can visit or volunteer at your local MPA, contact your legislators about ocean protection or donate to organizations fighting for ocean protection.

Coral reefs hold cultural significance for coastal communities as well as provide food and livelihoods for over 500 million people around the world. They also provide vital habitats for 25% of marine species, including endangered, threatened and keystone species.

However, changing climate and human activities are killing coral reefs at unprecedented rates, and, according to recent IPCC reports, up to 90% of coral could be lost by 2050.

Coral Vita is one organization leading the way in helping to counter the harmful impacts of dying coral reefs. Through land-based coral farming methods microfragmentation and “assisted evolution” Coral Vita accelerates coral growth and grows coral that is more resilient to climate change threats.
